One to one support

Each woman who comes to ADAPT for support is given her own dedicated support worker. This applies whether the woman is in the refuge or using the Outreach Service. The workers first concern is the woman's safety and second is to give the woman time to talk and to listen to her story.

When a woman is unsure of what to do, she often values having time to talk through concerns she has about her relationship; whether it is abusive, and the impact it is having on her and her children.

The support worker will help the woman to talk through her situation; identify her needs; clarify what she may want to do and support her in what she chooses to do. She may only want to talk to someone and nothing more.

She may want support in looking at all of her options and in making decisions about her future regarding finance and housing, legal options, identifying ways to help keep herself and her children safe, or considering if she would like counselling support for herself or her children.

The support worker will help her to think through any of these options. She will provide her with relevant information and will go with her if she wants support to access services.

The support worker’s primary concern is to listen to the woman and to be available to support her in relation to whatever action she may want to take.
